Young suspected Jouberton looters to appear in court on Friday | News Article

Following a handful of arrests this week in Jouberton in an effort to deter protestors from looting and destroying property in extension 10 in Klerksdorp in the North West, three minors aged between 16 and 17 are set to appear in court on Friday.

The three minors will re-appear before the Child Justice Court after their first appearance on Wednesday when they were all released in the care of their guardians. The minors were arrested this week after they were allegedly part of a group of 18 people that includes 15 adults with their age ranging from at least 20 to 37. This group claimed that it did so in an effort to highlight the plight of a lack of service delivery in that area, amongst others, and as a result scores of foreign-owned businesses were either shut down or looted. Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, earlier said the group is charged with public violence.

Myburgh said during the protests, scores of residents, including young people, barricaded roads and looted foreign-owned tuck-shops in Jouberton and Alabama. OFM News previously reported that a group, claiming to be “Forum for Service Delivery”, urged residents to embark on a total shutdown of the area, but the genuine Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD), with the correct spelling, has denied any knowledge of the message. The looting and the destruction of property in that area follow after a few incidents where the Matlosana municipal building was occupied by protestors from Khuma near Stilfontein and Jouberton.
