BRT system not electioneering - Mangaung Metro─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:17 Fri, 26 Apr 2019
The Mangaung Metro Municipality that includes Bloemfontein has refuted claims that the event to name the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is electioneering to woo voters for the upcoming general elections on 8 May 2019.
This as a group of disgruntled local residents arrived at the scene of the event with the intention of disrupting the process. They alleged that people from ward 5 in Phahameng were being sidelined from the project.
Thabo Lekhu from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Mangaung criticised the project saying it is just a money making scheme and the real people who should benefit from it will not. The municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, tells OFM News that the aspersions that have been cast on the totality of the project will not derail their effort to serve to people of the city. Khedama says they will not stop with the project due to a notion that the project is to woo voters and further says the municipality has a constitutional mandate to deliver to the people.
Lekhu earlier, at the much-anticipated announcement of the name on Friday in Phahameng in ward 5 at Sechaba, said the BRT system will never succeed with inadequate road infrastructure, amongst others, that face the municipality.
He alleged that a lump sum of R2.6 million that is being budgeted for by the municipality for the announcement event will only be looted by the elite under the false pretence of rendering basic services to the people.
But Khedama brushed off the allegations by Lekhu saying they understand that people are angry but the mayor is promised to engage with them further on the project.
