Sibanye-Stillwater breathes a sigh of relief over trapped mineworkers─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:17 Wed, 01 May 2019
Sibanye-Stillwater is breathing a sigh of relief after around 1,800 of its employees were declared safe on Tuesday after being trapped underground at one of its Rustenburg shafts in the North West.
The mining company yesterday said rails being transported underground had fallen down the company’s Thembelani shaft, trapping the workers on duty.
It further said safe exit plans were undertaken, including moving workers to another shafts from where they could be brought to the surface. Meanwhile, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) told OFM News that it was disturbed by reports that around 4000 workers at Thembelani Shaft were trapped underground.
The mine said none of the 1 800 employees have reported serious injuries. This happened just a day before South Africa and the rest of the world commemorates Workers' Day.
