Police on alert at Brits

Police on alert at Brits | News Article

The precinct of the Brits Magistrate’s Court will be of interest to the North West police during the appearance of at least 52 suspects who were arrested for public violence and robbery on Monday and Tuesday.

The arrests follow after a peaceful march turned violent on Monday, spreading to Tuesday. Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says 9 out of at least 52 arrested during the violence are set to face a charge of robbery after they grabbed the keys from ten truck drivers and forced them to park their vehicles in a certain way with the hopes of obstructing traffic in that area.

She says apart from these nine, the rest will face charges of public violence after the march that was intended to show the plight of the lack of service delivery, turned violent. OFM News previously reported that an alleged fake Facebook account threatened chaos in the scholar transport system after they were allegedly not paid their monies owed to them by the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management in the province. Myburgh, however, says the incident is unrelated to the threats and says the public order police are on the ground to monitor the situation but as for now all seems calm at the moment.

She says the police are aware that the protestors intimidated people, threatening them not to report for duty and as a result, the local businesses were shut down and some businesses are still sceptical about opening their doors for business. Myburgh says it alleged that the protestors allegedly used Sjamboks out in Oukasie near Brits to intimidate people.
