NC records least road fatalities | News Article

The Northern Cape recorded the least number of road fatalities during the Easter period as compared to the rest of the country.

Following statistics released by the Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande, on Thursday, the MEC for the Provincial Department of Transport, Safety, and Liaison, Lebogang Motlhaping, says they are pleased that the road carnage has decreased significantly in the province. Only 3 fatalities were recorded in the province during the Easter weekend as compared to the 16 that were recorded in 2018.

Motlhaping, however, alludes that the number of accidents caused by human factors is still of great concern in the province. He says the Easter period is mainly characterised by increased traffic volumes, which requires heightened operations and that they have strengthened road safety education and law enforcement initiatives.

Motlhaping says the Northern Cape will always ensure that their road safety campaign continues throughout the year. He says plans for the festive season are already under discussion.

“It is critical that road safety continues to be a 365-day programme for each and every road user. We want to commend our law enforcement officers and stakeholders for their continued commitment to ensuring road safety for all. We also appreciate the cooperation of all road users that continues to obey the rules to the road,” said Motlhaping.

He has sent a stern warning against traffic law offences and any acts of criminality. He further urged all road users to be cautious on the roads and to obey the rules of the roads.
