Three people killed in head-on collision in Free State─── 05:50 Mon, 06 May 2019
Three people, including a young boy, were killed in a head-on collision along the R59 near Sasolburg in the Free State.
Shortly after 4pm on Sunday, paramedics from ER24 and local emergency services arrived on the scene where they found three vehicles were involved in the collision, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
Two vehicles collided head-on and a third sustained minor damage. Upon further assessment, paramedics found a young boy, believed to be five years old, with fatal injuries. A man from the same vehicle was also found with fatal injuries.
"Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead on the scene. A woman from the same vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital."
A man from the second vehicle was found in a critical condition inside the vehicle. While paramedics were assessing and treating him, his condition rapidly deteriorated and he lost all vital signs.
Paramedics initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but were unable to revive him. He was later declared dead on the scene. A woman from the same vehicle was assessed and found with no injuries. She later declined to be transported to the hospital. The occupants from the third vehicle were unharmed in the collision. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision were not yet known, Vermaak said.
