IEC hopes #Election2019’s special votes will unfold smoothly | News Article

The IEC says it is ready to tackle more than 775 000 South Africans, as they will cast special votes today and tomorrow, while the remaining registered voters will take to the polls on Wednesday during the general elections.

In an interview earlier this morning with eNCA, the IEC's Mashego Sheburi said that over the course of these two days, the IEC has planned over 40 000 home visits owing to disability or illnesses that make it difficult for voters to go to their nearest voting stations. These home visits will make up the bulk of special votes.

"58% of those will be persons that we will visit at a place of confinement or at homes because owing to illness or disability they are unable to come to a voting station. The balance of those approved are persons who will vote at the voting stations at which they are registered. We can confirm that we are ready to receive all those 775 000 voters over the two days," Sheburi said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, voting stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00. The total number of stations across the country is 22 924. Meanwhile, persons who will go to the stations to vote will need to choose from 48 parties and will be required to present either their green book barcode identity document or a smart card identity document upon arrival. "If they have misplaced or lost these documents, they can visit their nearest Department of Home Affairs which will be open on the day from 07:00 to 21:00, where they will be able to obtain temporary identity certificates," Sheburi said.
