#OFMElectionWatch: 24 arrested following unrest in Viljoenskroon | News Article

More police officers are expected to be deployed to Viljoenskroon and neighbouring towns in the Free State following the unrest that erupted there on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, confirms there has been sporadic protests ahead of the big day tomorrow and that they have made a number of arrests and are keeping a close eye on all the areas affected. He says 24 people have thus far been arrested relating to the unrest that broke out in Viljoenskroon and are set to appear in court a day after the May 8 elections.

The IEC's spokesperson in the Free State, Mmabatho Rasengane, has further confirmed that security measures are being beefed up in Viljoenskroon and other towns such as Viljoenskroon, Marquard, and Kroonstad where there have been threats of protests.

Rasengane confirmed that the Viljoenskroon Town Hall has been set alight in the early hours of Tuesday and that their furniture was also torched. She, however, said no ballot boxes and other voting material were affected.

Rasengane said all IEC members are on high alert in these areas and that the torching of a community hall in Rammolotsi, Viljoenskroon, will not affect elections in the area.
