NUM ends underground sit-in at NW mine─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:21 Thu, 23 May 2019
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) confirms that operations at their Number Seven Shaft mine in Orkney, in North West can soon be expected to resume.
This, after the union has reached an agreement with the Chinese African Precious Metal Company (CAPM) over payment of employees last night, as 69 mineworkers staged an underground sit-in at the shaft, in demand of a salary increment.
The overseas management of the mine had allegedly refused to sign off on an 8% wage increase, that was agreed to by the South African-based management, resulting in the mineworkers resorting to the underground a sit-in since Saturday.
The union’s Joseph Montisetse has confirmed that all 69 NUM members have now resurfaced and that they have accepted an eight percent pay increase, as well as a R900 living allowance.
