Twenty arrested for public violence in Rouxville─── 14:29 Tue, 28 May 2019
Police have arrested 20 people for public violence and malicious damage to property in Rouxville just outside Zastron in the Free State on Monday night.
This as community members on Monday morning took to the streets and barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks, demanding jobs and service delivery.
According to police spokesperson Yanga Ngcukana, the disgruntled members last night (Monday) decided to intensify their protests by breaking into the ANC constituency office in the area. He said they damaged and vandalised the offices, breaking windows and doors in the process.
He said those arrested will appear at the Local Magistrate’s Court on charges of public violence on Wednesday.
Community members were protesting, saying the current employment strategy that is used by the municipality only favours certain people and not the rest of the community. They want the current application process to be scrapped and a new system to be introduced.
Ngcukana said the situation is calm but community members are demanding those arrested to be released.
Members of the Public Order Police were deployed to the area to stabilise the situation.
