CIT robberies remain a concern for authorities despite decline | News Article

Despite the decline in cash-in-transit (CIT) heists in the first five months in 2019 as compared to 2018, these robberies remain a huge concern for authorities in the South African Police Services (SAPS).

This follows after a few attempts and successful incidents of CIT were reported in Central South Africa and other parts of the country, which include Gauteng, since the beginning of 2019. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre’s (Sabric) CEO, Kalyani Pillay, reports that there have been only 99 CIT incidents reported thus far as compared to 145 in the same period in 2018.

OFM News previously reported that the North West Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, said that so far they have 11 ongoing court cases in various courts in the province. Two of these CIT incidents have been reported in the North West and Free State this month. Earlier, police spokesperson, Vish Naidoo, told OFM News they have launched a manhunt for a wounded suspect after an attempt of CIT robbery in Boshoek near Rustenburg, and another incident has been reported in Welkom near a popular bank on the corner of Ryk and De Kaap Streets this past Saturday, with suspects escaping with at least R1 million.

Two men, Elijah Rantsho (44) and Moeketsi Molwantwa (51), were recently sentenced to ten and five years imprisonment at the Klerksdorp Regional Court respectively. Rikhotso said they were part of a group of armed suspects who robbed a G4S AV truck in Klerksdorp on 17 March 2011 after they fired at it and forced it to stop. She further said the suspects subsequently disarmed the guards before they fled the scene with R3.6 million. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit swiftly linked the pair to the crime and they were arrested in Jouberton on 23 March 2011, a week after the incident.
