Robbers escape with over R1,4m in Welkom─── PULANE CHOANE 15:06 Tue, 28 May 2019
The Hawks in the Free State say they are looking for the 11 suspects said to have escaped with more than R1,4 million in a cross-pavement or cash-in-transit robbery over the weekend.
OFM News reported that a robbery was underway at Nedbank in Welkom, however, no precise information was provided by the police until Tuesday. The provincial Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, says a manhunt is underway after the suspects fired two shots at two security officers with AK47 rifles and escaped with the money. The suspects also left a vehicle at the scene before they fled Welkom's CBD on Saturday morning.
Steyn says two security officers from Fidelity Security collected money from Nedbank and on the way back to the armed vehicle they were approached by about 11 armed suspects who pointed AK47 rifles at them. The suspects ordered the driver to open the armed cash vehicle but instead, he raised his hands and refused. The suspects then fired two shots, one at the left front of the armed vehicle and one at a white Ford Ranger. The suspects fled the scene in a black BMW SUV with an unknown registration number.
In addition to the R1 451 214,85 that was robbed, Steyn also says a 9mm pistol was also taken. AK 47 spent cartridges and 9mm spent cartridges were gathered by the police as exhibits. The White Ford Ranger-Registration No-DXJ 935 L was abandoned by the suspects and confiscated by the Hawks as evidence. Steyn also states that there were no reported injuries or fatalities in this robbery.
