Five men accused of killing maize thieves appear in FS court─── PULANE CHOANE 13:00 Wed, 29 May 2019
The five men accused of killing one man and assaulting three others for allegedly stealing maize at a farm in Kroonstad will appear at the local court this afternoon.
This is according to the Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, who told OFM News that the men will appear in court at 14:00 on charges related to murder and two counts of attempted murder. OFM News had previously reported that the men, who are between the ages of 21 and 25, allegedly committed the crime on Saturday 22 May. It is expected that they will apply for bail at their court appearance today.
This comes after the men, who the police earlier identified as Cornelius Gideon Keller (26), Toko Jonas Molise (21), Paballo Maselesele (23), Abraham Hlalele (24), and Tiisetso Maseli (25), allegedly beat three victims up with sticks and sjamboks after they were allegedly found stealing maize. The body of another man, said to have been the fourth victim, was found on the grass alongside the Kroonstad to Viljoenskroon road after the suspects also allegedly beat and choked him to death.
The Cluster Commander of Kroonstad, Mapuleng Mbeloane, applauded the members for their swift action and thorough investigation in connecting the cases and ensuring that those responsible are brought to book.
