Correctional Services recognises FS and NC nurses for sterling job | News Article

Nurses working in the Department of Correctional Services in the Free State and Northern Cape are being recognised on Thursday during the celebration of International Nurses Day at the Grootvlei Prison in Bloemfontein.

This day is set to highlight the difficult situation of nurses when giving aid to prisoners in various hospitals in the department on a daily basis.

One of the issues expected to top the agenda of today's discussion is the harassment of nurses coming to prisoners' aid.

The spokesperson for Provincial Correctional Services, Puleng Mokhoane, tells OFM News that about 110 nurses across the Northern Cape and Free State are today attending the event.

She says the nurses would sometimes fall victim to being taken hostage by prisoners who would want to make demands.

She adds that nurses are currently locked in a private session where these issues are set to be laid bare.

The department earlier has had to deal with issues of its officers being killed in attacks by prisoners.

OFM News previously reported that a 35-year-old woman was murdered by a 37-year-old inmate at the Goedemoed Correctional Facility in the province.

Spokesperson Sam Makhele told OFM News that this incident occurred when two female officials found themselves held hostage by an inmate.

According to information from the police, the prisoner, who was busy with cleaning duties, forced both officials in the office where he locked himself in with them.

The report further said after the prison authorities realised that the wardens were held hostage, they then called on various teams, including the police, to manage the situation.

The event is set to start shortly.
