Protests flare up in NW─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:33 Thu, 30 May 2019
Protest action has flared up in the North West.
The police’s Captain Oupa Maselo confirms the R506 route between Christiana and Schweizer-Reneke has been blocked by protestors with stones and burning tyres.
He warns motorists to make use of alternative routes.
Maselo says approximately 80 people have embarked on the protests.
He says there has thus far not been any arrests and he confirms that the police are keeping a very close eye on the situation.
It is alleged that the protests are due to the non-payment of salaries by a local contractor responsible for hiring workers who are currently laying a brick-paved walkway.
SAPS’ Adel Myburgh added that all road users are advised to rather make use of the Bloemhof to Schweizer-Reneke route until the situation has calmed and the road has been cleared.
