Disappointing labour roadshow turnout in Jacobsdal─── PULANE CHOANE 12:52 Sat, 01 Jun 2019
There has been a low number of people from the Jacobsdal community at a roadshow currently underway in the small farming town 163 kilometres from Bloemfontein.
This comes as the Free State Department of Labour has organised a three-week long campaign at various communities across the province to inform residents of these areas about the compensation fund, and Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and give them an opportunity to check on any claims they in the past may have lodged but have not yet received feedback on. Speaking to the provincial head of the compensation fund, Dr Nandipha Kahla, she doesn't expect the turnout to be as large as it was last week. Pulane Choane reports from the Ratanang Sports Centre in the town.
While she could not provide the exact numbers of people the teams that were dispatched here have helped, a realistic Dr Nandipha Kahla said looking at the size of the town as well as demographic makeup of it, she doesn't expect people to come in large numbers as they did last week in Botshabelo. She, however, adds that she does expect more people to start showing up after they've completed their errands in town, which should be some time after lunch.
Meanwhile, residents of this community are urged to take a turn at the centre and bring with them their identity documents or smart card IDs to check on any claims they may have had or receive any information on labour issues they may have. Services currently being offered include inspectorate services, UIF and compensation fund, Public Employment Services (which allows jobseekers to have their details captured on Labour's work database) and career counselling, among others. This roadshow commenced at 7am this morning and will end at 4pm this afternoon.
