More arrests of municipal officials expected - Hawks | News Article

The Free State Hawks spokesperson, Lynda Steyn, says more arrests as a result of fraud and corruption are imminent in most municipalities across the province.

Steyn says in the next few days, they are expected to make, what she calls, “major arrests” of prominent officials.

She, however, refused to name the officials saying in the next few weeks more arrests are on the cards.

This comes after the case against Moqhaka municipal manager, Simon Mqhwathi, was on Monday postponed to Wednesday 5 June for his bail application at the Kroonstad Regional Court.

He was arrested last week after being on the run for more than a week.

He is charged with fraud and corruption, relating to failure to observe the financial municipal Act. His arrest relates to a R34 million security tender that was allegedly fraudulently awarded.

Mqhwathi was informed about his imminent arrest and asked to surrender himself at the nearest police station or the local police station on May 22 but failed to do so. He then posted a video of social media. The state opposes Mqhwathi’s bail while in his affidavit he says he can afford to pay R5 000 bail. Steyn added he will remain in custody.

Mqhwathi's arrest follows after Dihlabeng municipal manager Busa Molatsedi was arrested two weeks back and was also charged with fraud and corruption.

He was released on R10 000 bail.

The two managers are linked with a security tender which the police say was allegedly awarded fraudulently.
