A case of negligent driving has been registered and is under investigation following a collision between a train and a luxury vehicle in Bethlehem earlier today.
OFM News earlier reported that one person was rushed to the local Hoogland Medi-Clinic hospital following the crash, which happened at around 10:00 this morning. New information provided by the police spokesperson in the Free State, Puleng Lebakeng, states that the patient is a 27-year-old woman who allegedly got stuck on the tracks of the train while driving from a suburb in the area. She was then hit by the train.
Lebakeng said, according to an eye witness, the 27-year-old woman who was involved in an accident with the train, was driving along from the direction of Môrelig Suburb in Bethlehem while the train was travelling on the left side. She allegedly then tried to accelerate her car but failed to do so as it then got stuck on the train tracks, following which the train then hit her car. She was rushed to the hospital and police at this stage say that the nature of her injuries is unknown.
Sipho Towa from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in the province earlier told OFM News that she suffered moderate injuries and is currently receiving medical attention for these.
Meanwhile, the Bethlehem Cluster’s Acting Cluster Commander, Shembe Elias Vilakazi, says motorists should be vigilant when crossing railroads and must exercise caution when crossing railway lines. “People must also align themselves with road signs to avoid being injured or even dying unnecessarily as a result of ignoring road signs,” Vilakazi concluded.
