EXCLUSIVE: Medical interns on safety measures after second #PelonomiAttack─── CATHY DLODLO 11:33 Sat, 08 Jun 2019
In an exclusive interview with a medical Intern whom did not want to be named, OFM News has learnt that the University of the Free State (UFS) sent out notices asking interns and medical students to not report for duty on Saturday.
It was also confirmed to OFM News that about five additional security personnel were brought in, in an effort to beef up security at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, following a second attack targeting a staff member.
This morning, a female doctor was robbed at gunpoint at the hospital. Earlier this week the hospital made international headlines when a medical intern bit off a man's tongue during an attempted rape while the intern was on duty.
Medical interns from the Free State University say that they're not sure what to expect and when to return to the hospital.
UPDATE: In response to OFM News' queries, spokesperson of the UFS, Lacea Loader, says university management is aware of this second incident, and that they are in talks with the Health Department as well as management of Pelonomi Hospital regarding an increase in safety and security measures. "It is especially important to us because we also have students who work at the hospital at the clinical platform."
