Life sentences for #NW policeman murder─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:48 Sun, 09 Jun 2019
An effort to deter and curb the deaths of members of the police at the hands of criminals saw the North West High Court, sitting in Potchefstroom, giving two men who killed a police officer hefty sentences.
Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, says the two, Lincoln Myengwa Mabika (26) and Sifiso Bongani Ncala (27) were each sentenced to life imprisonment after they were both found guilty in connection with the murder of Constable Armand Wagner.
The duo was arrested in June 2018 for the murder and robbery of Wagner, who was stationed at Klerksdorp and who is said to have been friends with them at the time.
She says the convicted criminals demanded a cell phone and money from Wagner, who was then assaulted and stabbed several times with a knife. His body was dumped next to a Klerksdorp road. Funani says they were in custody ever since their arrest a year ago and were each sentenced to an additional 15 years imprisonment for robbery
Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, welcomed the sentencing of the two and applauded Klerksdorp detectives and other role-players for their dedication in making sure that the accused were arrested within hours after committing the crime - and ultimately convicted. Funani says Motswenyane said that killing of police officials undermines the authority of the state and it deserves a harsh punishment, as realised in this case.
