The cost-cutting measures applied to the Northern Cape’s budget by Premier Zamani Saul, seems to have inspired the national government to follow suit in their pursuit of trying to save costs when it comes to government officials.

OFM News' Lucky Nkuyane reports this comes as Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and his Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs counterpart, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, told the country's 257 mayors to use public transport or shuttles and stop hiring expensive luxury cars.

The new municipal cost-containment regulations have declared that local government officials and political office bearers must either use council vehicles or use public transport. The regulations are aimed at ensuring that municipality resources are used effectively, efficiently and economically. This follows Saul who cut spending on cars for his provincial executive, instead choosing to buy new ambulances for the province.

Zamani also wants to eliminate state tenders and establish a state-owned construction company. Saul says the state-owned construction company will train especially young people and absorb them but he’s nevertheless expected to consult widely.
