From Sunday, the Free State Education Department hosts winter school camps at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), in Bloemfontein.

The camps, which include Grade 8 to 12 learners from the different schools, are aimed at enabling learners to revise and prepare for exams.

Departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, says the winter school camp, which starts early this morning, will help more than 800 learners from the different schools with subjects such as mathematics, physical science, accounting and others they battle with.

Ndaba highlights that the camps are part of the province’s strategic plan to improve the quality of education and to ensure that the province remains a top performing province with a high matric pass rate.

He adds that this also helps in reducing the number of learners who drop out of schools before completing matric.

The province has in the past years been counted amongst those with high matric performance.

Opposition parties in the provincial legislature have nonetheless criticised the department for school's performances in lower grades and for the high number of dropouts.

Both the DA and the EFF said MEC Tate Makgoe must focus on schools that are still under performing and ensure that learners in lower grades perform as well as those in matric.

Ndaba told OFM News that winter camps are part of the departmental plan to archive this and overall improve the quality of education in the province.

These winter classes at the CUT are expected to run until June 28, 2019.
