Ten arrested protestors in JB Marks to appear in court today | News Article

Ten protestors, who were arrested in Ikageng near Potchefstroom in the North West will appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court today (Friday, 28 June 2019).

Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says the ten suspects are between the ages of 18 and 46 and were arrested on Wednesday during a service delivery protest in Extension 11.

The Ikageng Township descended into chaos in the early hours of Wednesday, when about 300 of the township’s residents barricaded the N12 between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp with rocks, burning tyres and other objects, bringing traffic on the road to a complete halt. The residents are accusing the troubled JB Marks Municipality which includes Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom of failing to render basic services.

Myburgh previously confirmed to OFM News that the situation has since normalised and the N12 remains open for traffic. Earlier on Thursday 13, June 2019 protestors blocked roads in the area of Promosa, Baipei, Extension 7 and Mohadin near Potchefstroom. Protestors also marched to the municipal offices to hand over a memorandum of demands. In August 2018 a group of about 150 disgruntled protestors marched through of Ikageng to Potchefstroom where they burned tyres and barricaded roads, leaving a trail of ash and clouds of smoke in protest against the Mayor Kgotso Khumalo, whom they wanted removed.

They accused him of ignoring repeated calls for better service delivery and made allegations of corruption. This as residents have been subjected to issues sewage spills, potholes and many other issues. This also led to the closing of some of the local businesses in that area.
