NW Government set aside R1,2 million for school safety─── LUCKY NKUYANE 09:16 Sat, 29 Jun 2019
Following a series of serious violent acts which has led to the death of pupils and teachers in and outside the premises of various schools across the province, the North West has set aside R1,2 million in relation to safety in schools.
Premier Job Mokgoro says his government will focus on a school safety programme to fight crime and criminality in and around school grounds.
This after the province in 2018 held a summit on school safety with various stakeholders with the hope of coming up with ideas on how to tackle the safety issue in schools across the province.
OFM News previously reported that a few incidents of violence have been reported this year in different schools. This includes the death of a 15-year-old who was fatally stabbed by another fellow pupil in Mooinooi near Brits.
Mokgoro says they will utilise the services of the South African Police Services (SAPS) to see to it that safety in schools is achieved.
The South African Democratic Teachers Unions (Sadtu) earlier criticised the provincial Department of Education for allegedly being slow in implementing resolutions on safety in schools.
Speaking to OFM News, the union's provincial chairperson, Mxolisi Bomvana, said such incidents are the result of the department's failure to act on its promises.
Bomvana said following the 2018 summit of safety in schools, the department is yet to act and implement policies taken in that summit.
