Protest to highlight social ills at Naledi in NW | News Article

Matters of social ills, such as poverty, the high rate of youth unemployment, including crime and drug abuse, are expected to be at the centre of a planned protest on Monday at the Naledi Municipality, that includes Vryburg in the North West.

This as the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the area called on young people to take to the streets in protest against the local and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.

Other issues that are expected to be at the forefront of this protest, include the rampant corruption within the provincial government departments and these municipalities, as well as the issue of water and sanitation. OFM News previously reported residents from the municipality took to streets in March, demanding that municipal managers from two councils resign or be fired after the municipality was found having illegally invested taxpayer’s money with VBS Mutual Bank.

The district municipality invested a whopping R150 million, of which R100 million was from the regional infrastructure grant, R25 million from the equitable share-free basic services and R25 million from the building fund.

Among other issues expected to be highlighted by the protest are the establishment of a university or college in the area, crime, safety and security, including the issue of drug abuse and youth in business through local economic development.

The ANCYL in a statement says they plan to hand over a memorandum to the Dr RS Mompati District Municipality, as well as to the Premier’s Office and different MEC's from different departments, including mayors. At least four municipalities were found to have illegally invested a total of R314 million of taxpayers’ money in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
