Omang project adds value to education | News Article

Free State MEC Tate Makgoe is expected to outline his plans for the roll-out of tablets to schools in the province in his upcoming budget speech next week.

This follows after the province became the first to deliver on President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address’ promise to get learners connected.

OFM News spoke to Makgoe during his visit with one of the first schools, Vulumasango, in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. This, after the Closed-Loop Learner Network Company's (CLN) Co-Founder, Ajit Gopalakrishnan, presented a demo presentation to Makgoe regarding the device tackling grades ten to twelve.

Makgoe visited the school to do an assessment of the project as well as listen to feedback from the learners on how the devices have helped them regarding their studies. The CLN OMANG device aims at replacing textbooks at schools in the Free State – in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement in this State of the Nation Address.

The device is uniquely designed to assist students with a feature that keeps track of the students’ performance and provides additional assistance if the student is underperforming. The tablet is pre-loaded with subject choices and has additional educational websites and video tutorials.

After two attempts of students hacking the device they were forced to re-launch the device in January and February with an upgrade in March this year. CLN is set to enrol the Omang device in August and September of this year.
