The establishment of a Provincial School Safety Steering Committee, which will work with various departments, the school governing bodies and community-based organisations, is just one of the interventions the Free State Education will embark on.

This will be done to address the growing problem of school safety, according to the MEC of the provincial department, Tate Makgoe. While delivering his budget vote speech for the 2019/20 financial year, he revealed another measure his department will work on to address this issue will include the collaboration with the provincial police department.

OFM News reported earlier this year that a 19-year-old Grade 10 learner was killed by a 21-year-old Grade 11 learner at the Metsimaphodi Secondary School in Dewetsdorp, Free State. To reduce such incidents, Makgoe says the department will roll out safety training to fight school violence.

As he addressed the matter of safety concerns owing to infrastructural faults, Makgoe said the department would be conducting an audit at all its schools to assess the infrastructure. By doing so, Makgoe said the safety and occupational risks to educators and learners at these structures will be eliminated.
