Kimberley Diamond Cup a qualifier for Olympics─── 09:35 Fri, 19 Jul 2019
The 2019 Diamond Cup Action Sport Festival powered by the International Festival of Extreme Sport (FISE) will be launched by Premier Zamani Saul today at the Kimberley Skate Park in the Northern Cape.
This event is consolidating the Northern Cape’s brand positioning of extreme adventure and sport. The Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC) skateboarding brand has matured to the extent that other action sports disciplines are now incorporated. Northern Cape will become the mecca of extreme sports with skateboarding, mountain biking and track events.
Skateboarding has recently been accredited as an Olympic Sport for the 2020 Tokyo and the 2024 Paris Olympics with the main Kimberley Diamond Cup event in Kimberley becoming a qualifier venue for the Olympics.
MEC Maruping Lekwene stated that they take pride in the fact that the Northern Cape became the pioneers of organised skateboarding in the country at a time when skateboarding was not regarded as an acceptable sporting code.
The launch will also serve as a catalyst to lobby for the establishment of an Action Sports Federation affiliated to the South African Sports Confederation (SASCOC). The Premier and MEC will hold a Press Conference immediately after the official programme.
