Animal cruelty: Modise in court─── PULANE CHOANE 10:21 Mon, 22 Jul 2019
The Speaker of Parliament, Thandi Modise, is set to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court in the North West on charges related to animal cruelty charges.
It is alleged that she neglected animals on her farm, leaving over 50 of these animals dead.
She has been taken to court by AfriForum's private prosecution unit after the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) complained to the organisation about Modise's farm, which was found littered with carcasses of animals in 2014. It is reported that 50 dead pigs and carcasses of other animals, including sheep, goats, chickens, and ducks, were found.
After the SPCA took to the farm to investigate, following complaints, they allegedly found the surviving animals in a desperate condition and ultimately had to euthanise 162 of these animals, which were allegedly left for a long period of time without food or water. AfriForum announced last year that it would privately pursue the case against Modise on behalf of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA).
This will be Modise’s debut appearance at the court after she could not appear on 20 June owing to her parliamentary obligations. As a parliamentary speaker and presiding officer at President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address (Sona) in Cape Town, Modise was unable to attend the court appearance owing to her duties at Ramaphosa’s SONA event which also was also set to take place on the date mentioned.
