Councillors of the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality are not attending council meetings and the Free State MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Thembeni Nxangisa, says that he has had enough.

Nxangisa was expressing this after several council meetings failed to take place due to a lesser number of councillors attending, which resulted in the meeting not being able to form a quorum.

Last week, another council meeting was postponed due to a shortage of councillors. Opposition parties like the EFF and DA were amongst the parties who could not attend, which resulted in four members needed to form a quorum. The meeting, therefore, did not take place. It is believed that the postponed meeting is set to take place before the end of this week.

Nxangisa told OFM News that councillors need to start attending meetings or else they will not get paid as they do not put the needs of residents first. He, however, urged residents to continue paying for services such as water and electricity. Maluti-A-Phofung had struggled several times to form a quorum with the purpose to elect a mayor and speaker.
