Manhunt launched for fake taxi operators in Welkom─── PULANE CHOANE 11:42 Tue, 23 Jul 2019
Police are warning taxi users to be cautious when using public transport. This as two more people were reportedly robbed at gunpoint when they took a lift from a driver who pretended to be a taxi operator.
OFM News earlier reported that a 31-year-old female was robbed at gunpoint in Welkom on Sunday evening in a brown Toyota Corolla. A similar incident also happened to a couple in the city on Sunday night. In this incident, police spokesperson in the Free State, Stephen Thakeng, told OFM News that the couple was waiting for a taxi in Welkom CBD on Sunday when the driver of a brown Toyota Corolla stopped next to them and pretended to operate a taxi. The man sat in front while his girlfriend then sat at the back with another male passenger. The couple and the suspects then drove to Reitz Park but as they were about to get off, the suspect pointed a gun at the woman, demanding more money from her.
The woman’s boyfriend gave the suspect R40 cash but the suspect demanded more money. The couple told him that they didn’t have more money. The woman then grabbed the firearm and threw it to her boyfriend. She opened the door of the moving vehicle and jumped out, leaving her cell phone and clothing inside the vehicle. The suspects drove off with her boyfriend and demanded his bank card and pin code, after which they dropped him off at an unknown location.
The couple reported the incident to the Welkom police and a case of armed robbery was opened. The police have called on anyone with information leading to the arrests of these suspects to contact Detective Warrant Officer Riaan de Lange of Welkom Detective Services at 057-391-6271 during office hours or on his mobile number: 082-372-0423.
