Taxi summit addresses industry’s reputation─── 13:21 Wed, 24 Jul 2019
The Gauteng Taxi Summit held in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, today must establish ways to end passengers’ frustrations, which is caused by a lack of customer care by taxi operators.
This is according to Santaco Gauteng chair, Johannes Mkonzo, who was addressing delegates at the two-day provincial taxi summit hosted in the Vaal.
Mkonzo emphasised that the taxi industry is characterised by violence, fraud, and corruption and that it is not good for customers. He adds that today's summit should find a way forward in an attempt to correct the bad reputation the industry has.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA), Alpheus Mlalazi, says the summit must find ways to end the high road carnage caused mainly by taxies on South African roads.
Previous resolutions of this summit, including attempts to end drivers’ bad behavior and violence, have failed. The taxi industry in Gauteng transports about 60% of the public, followed by trains at 21% and buses at 8%. The minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, will address the summit tomorrow.
