Municipality cuts electricity due to illegal connections─── 11:52 Thu, 25 Jul 2019
The residents of Boipatong and Bophelong in the Vaal, Gauteng, have last night barricaded roads with various objects, expressing their frustration over their electricity supply being shut down after 7 pm every evening.
OFM News learned from residents that this has been the situation for the past two months and that according to them, the Emfuleni Local Municipality has a lack of commitment to its residents.
Responding to this claim, municipal spokesperson, Stan Gaba, told OFM News that illegal electricity connections increases after 7pm during winter, which puts the transformers under pressure and leads them to sometimes explode. Gaba further elaborated that several attempts were made by the municipality to communicate with the affected residents, and also to remove the illegal connections, but the municipal officials were pelted with stones.
Last month, the municipality introduced an initiative to audit and remove illegal electricity connections in the Emfuleni area and the results indicated that Boipatong and Bophelong are on top of the list of consuming electricity illegally.
