NW township normalises following unrest─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:54 Sat, 03 Aug 2019
The situation in the Kanana township, between Orkney and Klerksdorp in the North West, has normalised this weekend after unrest erupted on Friday over the construction of a nearby solar plant.
Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, tells OFM News officials from the Matlosana Local Municipality addressed the Kanana community regarding their complaints and they promised to respond to their complaints this coming week. Myburgh says residents have been quiet since the address.
She says police did open a public violence case over the roads that were blocked and barricaded using burning tyres. However, no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
The unrest was concentrated in Kanana and there was no total shutdown as alleged in a flyer circulated by the disgruntled group on Thursday.
While police are unable to elaborate on the exact reasons behind the unrest, OFM News has been reliably informed that a group called the Kanana Community Representative is unhappy with the hiring process at the solar plant located near the Tau Lekoa Mine.
It’s alleged a large number of the people employed on site are from neighbouring Leeudoringstad as opposed to Kanana, angering the community. There is also the matter of service delivery in the embattled municipality of late.
