Dewetsdorp road reopened | News Article

The stretch of road between Bloemfontein and Dewetsdorp, 5 kilometres from the Grootvlei prison, has been re-opened by police following its closure this morning after a cash-In-transit (CIT) heist.

Hawks spokesperson in the Free Sate, Lynda Steyn, told OFM News that despite this they are still unable to comment on the matter due to  insufficient details from the scene.

She says due to the large volume of bullets that were fired on the scene, allegedly by suspected robbers, a large part of the road was closed.

She adds that police, with the assistance of the Hawks, are still on the scene to try and determine what may have transpired during the incident.

Steyn says information is still sketchy at this time but adds she will be able to reveal more later on after all facts have been gathered by police from the scene.

Scores of motorists were re-directed to a different route this morning. This was to allow the police, including forensic officials on the scene, the opportunity to further investigate the incident with the assistance of the Hawks.

Police also confirmed to OFM News that there were no casualties reported, and no cash was taken by the suspected robbers.

OFM News reported that eyewitness Mojalefa Matobako said he was in a minibus taxi on his way to work, travelling with other passengers along the R702 at around 06:30 am, when they spotted a luxury vehicle speeding past towards a cash-in-transit van.

Matobako described the incident as a scene from a movie. He said someone from the luxury vehicle began shooting at the van and the minibus taxi nearly got caught in the crossfire.
