The ANC in the Free State has retained their seats during the by-elections in the Moqhaka and Matjhabeng Local Municipalities.
Ward 20 in Moqhaka and ward 17 in Matjhabeng both became vacant as a result of the resignation of its councillors. The wards, both previously ran by the ANC, were on Wednesday hotly contested by six candidates and four political parties. Nyaniso John Tshokotshela now takes the reins in Matjhabeng’s ward 17 while Lehlohonolo Enoch Ramajoe is the new councillor for Ward 20 in the Moqhaka Municipality. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa’s spokesperson in the Free State, Mmathabo Rasengane, says voter turnout for both wards was above 35% and the party retained both seats with more than 80% of the votes cast.
In Matjhabeng the party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 90.70% of the votes cast compared to 83.72% in the 2016 Municipal Elections while in Moqhaka the party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 87.97% of the votes cast compared to 87.66% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.
