Union expresses concern over NC health system─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:41 Tue, 13 Aug 2019
The poor state of healthcare facilities in the Northern Cape has once again come in the spotlight.
This, as members of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa in the Pixley Ka Seme District have taken to the streets to voice their frustrations over poor working conditions and the lack of resources, amongst others.
The union says they have embarked on a demonstration outside the De Aar Hospital and the district offices after their plea over the shortage of nurses, equipment, and ambulances have fallen on deaf ears. The province has for years made headlines over its ailing health system and the controversial Kimberley Psychiatric Hospital, which has been under construction for more than a decade, with nearly R2 billion unaccounted for.
The union says it is concerning that most healthcare facilities are understaffed whilst there is a high number of unemployed nurses and those employed forced to do with inadequate resources. Meanwhile, the provincial department of health is yet to respond to OFM News’ inquiry.
