Ramaphosa reacts to #Marikana commemoration | News Article

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the Marikana tragedy that took place seven years ago in North West stands out as the darkest moment in our young democracy.

Ramaphosa shared his views on his Twitter platform. This as today marks the seven-year anniversary of the tragic incident that sent shockwaves across the country.

Today thousands of miners are expected to converge at the koppie where 34 miners were shot and killed by the police and honour the memories of those fallen during this incident on 16 August 2012.

On his Twitter account, Ramaphosa says today they remember what he calls 44 compatriots who lost their lives in Marikana seven years ago this week.

He adds that "Never again can we allow such a tragedy to befall our nation".

Speaking to the SABC earlier, the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng shared his views saying what happened in Marikana is a typical example of how some leaders handle problems in South Africa and more questions still need to be answered.

While speaking to the national public broadcaster, Mogoeng said South Africans tend to look away from issues affecting the country.

He added that he knows one of the police officers currently going to trial at the North West High Court to be one of the top police officers the country has ever produced. He added that he does not understand what drove him to have allegedly committed what he is accused of currently.

The Marikana tragedy happened after wage negotiations between management and unions reached a deadlock. The South African Government and the Ian Farlam Commission have been heavily criticised for having failed to hold those linked to the murder of miners accountable.
