NW ailing road infrastructure in spotlight─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:36 Tue, 20 Aug 2019
The North West province has hit the ground running in a bid to find a solution for its ailing roads and infrastructure during an academic conference called a colloquium.
The MEC for Public Works and Roads, Oageng Molapisi, has held several community meetings in various districts in the province. The province is amongst many that have been heavily criticised by businesses and residents for failing to deal with the deteriorating roads with many potholes.
Molapisi says the department has been allocated the equitable share for roads infrastructure for the 6th administration, which increased from R933 million for the previous administration to R1,6 billion over the coming three years. During his budget speech in the Provincial Legislature, Molapisi said to keep the road network complying with international standards, the province needs to ensure that funding for road infrastructure is adequate to improve the current conditions from poor to fair and ultimately to very good.
Molapisi says to date in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District alone, the department has awarded and completed three re-gravelling projects and four rehabilitation projects with a combined contract value of R49,6 million as part of the Roads Maintenance Recovery Programme.“The Provincial Road Network is a catalyst for economic development, and good roads will always attract potential investment into the Province, thus growing our GDP.”
“We have therefore undertaken a very difficult task of correcting these and we are taking the road discussions to all our districts and to the ground where our people still live with the hope that we will one day deliver on what was promised,” he adds.
