NC Education set to focus on safety issues─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:33 Wed, 28 Aug 2019
Issues relating to safety and security at schools in the Northern Cape will soon come under scrutiny when the Education Department hosts a Provincial School Safety Summit next month.
The summit, set to be held on 20 September in the province’s capital city, is set to draw emphasis on the need to ensure a safe schooling environment in the province. Delegates from the national department, members of the South African Police Service, the broader community, as well as other stakeholders are expected to be in attendance.
The announcement of this upcoming summit was made during MEC Mac Jack’s tabling of his budget vote before the Provincial Legislature on Tuesday. It also comes at a time when the country is still reeling from the death of a 16-year-old learner who died after he was stabbed inside a classroom at the Shawbury Secondary School in the Eastern Cape last week. The lack of safety for both learners and teachers at schools across the country has become one of the major problems facing the education system.
