NW police attackers arrested after drug bust─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 15:22 Fri, 30 Aug 2019
Four suspects in the North West are soon expected to appear in court for the possession of drugs, stolen goods, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
This, after they were arrested yesterday when the police followed-up on information received about drugs and suspected stolen goods that were hidden inside a house in Promosa outside Potchefstroom.
According to police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, a search and seizure operation conducted by the police resulted in the recovery of numerous suspected stolen cellular phones as well as drugs, possibly crystal meth. She says it was at that point that the tenants became aggressive and other members of the community mobilised and unleashed an attack against the police. Myburgh says two police officers were taken to hospital after sustaining serious head wounds while the other two escaped with light injuries.
She adds that two police vehicles that were parked outside the house, were also pelted with stones and their tyres were slashed during the confrontation.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 35, are expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday 2 September.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Ryno Naidoo, has meanwhile condemned the incident and warned that attack on police officers is an attack against the State, which will not be tolerated.
