Sexual assault and victimisation of women at the University of the Free State (UFS) and across the country came under scrutiny at today’s #AmINext protest at the campus.

The University and students agreed that classes will be suspended on Friday, 06 August 2019, in solidarity with protests seeking to highlight the killing of women.

Women and men wearing black to highlight this plight today gathered at the university main campus in Bloemfontein to explore channels and ways of how to curb the scourge against the most vulnerable group in society.

Meanwhile, campus management says the march, which seeks to condemn all forms of violence against women, will take place tomorrow at 11:00 am.

On its verified Facebook account, the campus management says all academic activities on the three campuses will be suspended on Friday as a gesture of solidarity with the current national movement opposing violence against women at South African universities.

“Staff and students are encouraged to wear black tomorrow to highlight advocacy around sexual and gender-based violence”

“Essential services and activities that are scheduled and cannot be postponed or cancelled, will continue,” says management.

“As a university, we condemn all forms of violence against women in solidarity with other institutions of higher learning in the country, it further adds.

Management also says a prayer service for staff and students will be held on the Qwaqwa Campus tomorrow at 12:00.
