Fire at Botshabelo butchery not xenophobic-related - police─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:45 Thu, 12 Sep 2019
The blaze that destroyed a butchery in Botshabelo, between Bloemfontein and Thaba’Nchu in the Free State, has left many confusing the incident with ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in Gauteng, in particular.
However, police spokesperson Peter Kareli confirmed to OFM News that this incident in the early morning hours is not related to the xenophobic attacks or lootings. This confusion mainly follows reports that the police in Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, and Bloemfontein managed to foil alleged planned looting attempts after a tip-off from community members.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Meanwhile, Kareli on Wednesday said the situation in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality was calm, with no arrests made. He said the Public Order Police is patrolling the area to ensure that order is maintained.
Kareli mentioned in Bloemfontein looting attempts were also reported in the phase six area but were thwarted by the police.
