SACAA investigates FS aircraft’s unauthorised landing at OR Tambo─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:23 Fri, 13 Sep 2019
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is probing the alleged unauthorised landing of a private aircraft at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday 29 August 2019 that is said to have taken off at the Free State's Tempe Airport.
The aviation spokesperson, Kabelo Ledwaba, says the investigation into the unusual landing of this light aircraft at South Africa’s busiest airport is picking up momentum. He says in line with the SACAA’s classification, the aircraft is regarded as experimental and is mainly used for recreational purposes. He adds that the Private Pilot’s Licence holders are not authorised to conduct any commercial operations. Ledwaba says the director of Civil Aviation has since urged the investigators to leave no stone unturned into the matter.
The investigation into the matter involves officials from the Civil Aviation and investigators from the Accident and Incident Investigations Division - an independent unit tasked with investigating aircraft accidents and serious incidents on behalf of the Department of Transport. Meanwhile, the Director of Civil Aviation, Poppy Khoza, says “they are grateful that this was a non-fatal incident, but maintains that incident remains bizarre, worrying, and an extremely dangerous act.
“We are resolute that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”
All facts, evidence, and sequence of events and/or decisions by all involved will be interrogated thoroughly,” she says. Ledwaba says the incident in question relates to a private flight involving a light aircraft called RV-10, which is a four-seat, single-engine, low-wing, amateur-built aeroplane sold in kit form. He adds that according to the preliminary information, the aircraft was carrying three (3) people on board, two (2) passengers and a pilot who holds a Private Pilot’s Licence. “The aircraft landed at OR Tambo International Airport at approximately 13:25,” he further adds.
