More controversy surrounding NW royal councils | News Article

The controversy around the day-to-day state of affairs in the North West's traditional councils continues to be at the centre of discussion.

This, after North West premier Job Mokgoro recently released a report on the Batlhako Ba Leema royal council in Tlhatlaganyane, near Rustenburg, instructing them to immediately nominate a successor to the late Kgosi Tlhogwane.

A squabble between members of the royal ensued following the death of Tlhogwane 14 years ago.

Mokgoro says the council is required to inform him, in writing, of the identification of Leema’s successor in terms of Section 12 of the provincial Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Amendment Act, and it has only 30 days to do so.

OFM News previously reported that Mokgoro earlier ordered a forensic investigation into the affairs of the controversial Bakgatla Ba Kgafela Traditional Council following a report into issues of maladministration and misappropriation by the council.

Upon releasing this report on Monday at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, Mokgoro said the investigation by the Maluleke Commission of Inquiry scrutinised the transactions and the financial affairs of the council and its companies.

Following the damning report by the commission, he further announced that in terms of his powers, he will appoint a person to take control of the affairs of the council.
