DCS mum on Goedemoed gross human rights violations allegations─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 11:34 Sun, 29 Sep 2019
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is yet to respond to OFM News’ queries on a report by the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) about human rights violations that may have exacerbated the attack on two female wardens.
The brutal attack left one of the victims dead at the Goedemoed prison earlier this year.
News24 alleges JICS officials received reports of wardens physically harming and humiliating inmates, something which the Department of Correctional Services has denied to the inspectorate, but not to media.
JICS’s investigation looks into the hours long hostage situation that occurred in March 2019, that resulted in a female prison warder, Nomsa Stuurman, being stabbed to death by an inmate who was serving a life sentence for murder, rape, robbery and assault.
The inmate also managed to grab a second female warder and rape her. The report reveals the attack on Stuurman was orchestrated by a fellow male warder, who was unhappy with the deceased.
It is alleged the male warder has been suspended for his involvement in the planning of the attack. DCS is yet to confirm this to OFM News.
