Makgoe aims for top matric position─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 16:11 Tue, 01 Oct 2019
The Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has once again expressed his confidence in reclaiming the number one position when matric results for the class of 2019 are released on 7 January 2020.
Addressing several Bloemfontein schools at Tsoseletso High School on Tuesday, Makgoe told hundreds of learners and teachers gathered at this top-performing public school that it is all systems go for the end-of-the-year examinations and they are looking forward to obtaining over 90% pass rate throughout the province. His visit to the schools came as most schools in the country re-opened for the fourth quarter, and with matriculants only left with a couple of days before the final exams.
Makgoe said although a number of township schools have in the past been performing fairly well, he is confident that they will be able to attain a 100% pass rate.
“I am very confident that we are going to get 100% from township schools, it will be for the first time because the last time St Bernard's High School gave us 100% was some years ago before they dropped the ball. So, today they came here to say ‘look we are going to give you 100% pass rate’. This school is a special school for us because it is a school that does not teach Mathematical Literacy, it only teaches Maths, Science and Accounting. It is one of our top schools with high performing teachers and learners.”
Makgoe, however, alludes that this school and many others in Mangaung had in the past been faced with a lack of support for progressed learners and that they have now rectified that.
The province held the number one spot in the country for two consecutive years, although it slipped down to position two in 2018, achieving 87.5%, while Gauteng obtained the highest pass rate at 87.9%.
Addressing learners at this Bloemfontein-based school, Makgoe said all districts in the province improved in 2018, and two of his districts were in the top 10 nationally.
He said the Motheo and Fezile Dabi districts ranked top in the country and he wants to see all districts in the province in the top 10 countrywide when results are released next year.
