DA lays criminal charges against Tswaing over sewage spillages | News Article

The Tswaing Local Municipality, which includes Ottosdal in the North West, claims to be unaware of a case lodged by the Democratic Alliance (DA) over sewage spillages.

The municipal’s administrator, Tiro Mose, says the municipality has not yet been served with any legal documentation concerning the DA’s case. He says although the municipality is facing a water and sanitation problem, they have made progress to deal with and fix the problem. On Monday, the DA’s Carin Visser laid criminal charges at the Sannieshof Police Station against the Tswaing Local Municipality Mayor, Lydia Malwane, and the Municipal Manager (MM), Isaac Moruti, for allegedly neglecting and mismanaging the sewage spillage in Agisanang. But Mose says it’s not solely the municipality’s duty to safeguard the issues or sewage spillage but also that of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

Mose says both municipalities will have to come to the party and work hard to resolve the issues of water spillages. He adds that the municipality was shocked recently when it discovered rocks inside a blocked drain during a call to one of the sites after being made aware of the situation. Meanwhile, Visser says the lack of sanitation management in Agisanang is causing pollution as the sewer runs with the gravitational flow into the Harts River.

She adds that the sewer dump of Agisanang is also dysfunctional with sewer drenching the catchment area of the Harts River and polluting the grazing fields of livestock. She adds that the DA has on several occasions reported this sewage spill to both municipalities, however, “our pleas continue to be ignored whilst residents continue to live in these inhumane conditions”.
