Drought: Impact, solutions discussed in Central SA─── 15:52 Tue, 15 Oct 2019
Land Care Week was officially launched in Mothibistad in the Northern Cape today by the MEC of Agriculture, Nomandla Bloem.
Some of the issues on the table of over 200 farmers include how to develop land and the various methods of farming.
As the country is currently experiencing a drought, it might eventually lead to a food shortage, rising food prices, and subsequently, people might starve.
The spokesperson of the department, Zandisile Luphahla, says government aims to address the issue and come up with possible solutions for farmers and the community going forward. Farmer's Weekly has also noted that in the Klein Karoo region in the Northern Cape, various farmers have recently suffered devastating losses due to the impact of the ongoing drought.
This comes after the Free State hosted a commonage summit last week to address farmers’ concerns.
The MEC of Agriculture in the Free State, William Bulwane, also gave consideration to the drought experienced in the central parts of the country. “Farmers have really been struggling and the department is looking into how to best assist those in the province,” he said.
One of the Mangaung farmers, Badirile Ngonela, said it is important that the provincial government provides some kind of relief to those who are struggling. He also highlighted how the ongoing drought in Central South Africa remains a great concern.
