#SchoolViolence: Koffiefontein pupils to receive counselling─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:27 Wed, 16 Oct 2019
The Free State Department of Education says it will provide counselling to pupils at the Reikaeletse Secondary School in Koffiefontein.
This after the death of Lungelo Khathane (16), who died on Wednesday morning after he was stabbed by a fellow pupil (16) on Tuesday afternoon. The departmental spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, says the department earlier this morning dispatched its officials to the school.
The police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, has confirmed to OFM News that the 16-year-old pupil has since been arrested in that area, following the murder of his fellow school mate with a screwdriver yesterday after a fight ensued between him and the deceased outside the schoolyard at around 14:30.
Ndaba says the normal procedure following such an incident is that the school’s code of conduct will be followed to address the incident.
Ndaba says the allegations at this stage are that the two boys were fighting over a girl who is in grade 9 at the school. He says the girl, as the rest of the pupils, will also receive counselling. Ndaba says they have been told that Khathane was a very quiet and humble boy. Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has tweeted about the incident, sending his condolences to the learner’s family, friends and teachers. This is the fourth violent death involving learners in central South Africa within eleven days.
